New P&Z commissioners named

During a its meeting Tuesday, May 15, the Blaine County Commission named two new replacements to sit on the Blaine County Planning and Zoning Commission. Named to the P&Z were Brooke Bonner, who lives in the Bellevue area and will be replacing County Commissioner Larry Schoen in his former P&Z position, and Brian Rozyla, who will replace Judy Harrison, who is stepping down from her position on the P&Z.

The new P&Z commissioners will be a welcome addition, County Commissioner Tom Bowman said.

"We're pleased to have such highly qualified people," Bowman said.

Donate for Kjesbo's benefit

A new tax-deductible fund has been set up to help long time Wood River Valley resident and Sun Valley Ski Education coach Craig Kjesbo.

Kjesbo is suffering from the recurrence of a brain tumor.

Checks may be sent to the Bald Mountain Rescue Fund, "In honor of Kjesbo," at Box 203, Sun Valley, ID 83353, or deposited at the Bank of America in Ketchum into the Craig Kjesbo FBO account.

Bike to work

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 18, offering "Commuter Appreciation Stations" along the bike path from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Encourage your co-workers to ride to work because the business or organization with the highest participation can claim Bike to Work Day Employer Challenge bragging rights, with public recognition.

Try to unseat the reigning champ for the past three years, Scott USA. Other strong contenders from year's past include Smith Sport Optics, Power Engineers, Marketron, St. Luke's, Idaho Mountain Express and The Community School.

Country star to play YMCA benefit

Country musician Dwight Yoakam will take the stage in a benefit concert for the YMCA at River Run Lodge in Ketchum, 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3.

The cost will be $55 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Due to the limited seating and parking at the outdoor amphitheater of River Run, a VIP package is available for $150. The package includes valet service to bypass parking shortages, early entry to ensure no lines are encountered upon entrance, and a pre-concert reception at the River Run Lodge, with complimentary appetizers and drinks.

Tickets go on sale Monday, May 21, through www.ticketweb.com or by calling the Wood River YMCA at 727-YMCA. No ticket reservations prior to May 21 will be accepted.

Learn to self-rescue

The Sawtooth Mountain Guides and Y Rocks are offering a free intro to a Self-Rescue Climbing Course at the Y Rocks climbing gym in Hailey. The course will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Blaine County Fitness Center, 21 East Maple St. The course is recommended for climbers of all abilities.

Crisis Hotline hires new director

The board of directors of the Crisis Hotline announced Tuesday that it has hired Sher Foster as the new executive director of the organization. Foster comes to the Crisis Hotline with a strong background with non-profit organizations. Along with her work for several valley-based organizations, she spent three years at The Brotherhood Crisis Center in Seattle.

This year, the Crisis Hotline, an anonymous and confidential crisis intervention and referral service, celebrates its 20th year of serving the Wood River Valley and neighboring communities. Volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist those in need of help.

YAK! gets funds from Souper Bowl

St. Luke's Volunteer Core brought the Souper Bowl to Hailey on Feb. 4, in the form of homemade soups and hand-painted soup bowls. Thanks to donations by Blaine County businesses, students and volunteers, the Volunteer Core generated $1,500 in proceeds from the event. This amount was recently donated to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center's Youth Adult Konnections!

St. Luke's YAK! helps to create opportunities for youth and adults to build healthy relationships, enabling the young people of the community to make wise decisions, choose positive paths, and grow up healthy, competent, caring and responsible.

INL gives grants to local schools

The Idaho National Laboratory announced this week that three Blaine County School District teachers would receive grants for improvements in math, science and technology education.

Krista Jones, of Bellevue Elementary, and Larry Barnes and Matthew Phillips, of Wood River High School, will receive up to $2,000 from Battelle Energy Alliance. BEA is the managing and operating contractor for INL for the U.S. Department of Energy.

This year, 41 grants were awarded to Idaho teachers in grades K-12 to help fund classroom equipment, materials and professional development.
