A 9-year-old Carey boy was transported to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center Friday afternoon after he was shot in the foot with a .22 caliber rifle.

Blaine County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Jay Davis said the boy was accidentally shot at about 4:30 p.m. on west Griffin Loop, south of Carey. He said a friend of the boy's family, Joshua Cobb, 32, of Hailey, was pumping the rifle to unload it when it discharged.

"He (the boy) came around the side of the car right when the rifle went off and it hit him in the foot," Davis said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was transported to the hospital south of Ketchum by a Wood River Fire and Rescue ambulance. A sheriff's office report said the boy was treated and released.

Davis said the bullet passed cleanly through the boy's foot. "He had a small wound that didn't require any stitches," he said.

Davis said deputies determined that the shooting was an accident and no charges were filed.
