Having already stopped at Glenns Ferry, Jerome and Shoshone, the Fifth District high school rodeo circuit came to Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey for two go-rounds Friday and Saturday, May 11-12.
Carey, Wood River and Camas County cowboys and cowgirls made some progress in Carey. For instance, Carey's Brittany Hennefer (24 points barrels, 16 breakaway, 29 goats, 23 poles) moved into seventh place in the girls' all-around standings with 92 points.
Hennefer clocked fourth-place and fifth-place rides in barrel racing last weekend and had a fourth in goat tying. Wood River's Kathryn Smith was right behind in the barrels and currently stands in sixth place in barrel racing ranks.
Bellevue's Kade Smith moved up in calf roping with a fourth-place ride Saturday. Hill City's Andy Olson was sixth in calf roping the same day. Olson and partner Mackenzie Stevens of Gooding were fifth in team roping, and Wood River's Hanna Thacker eighth in poles.
The district finals are Friday and Saturday, May 25-26 followed by state rodeo June 18-23 at Pocatello.
Meanwhile, Kade Smith (80 points) maintained his sizable lead in the boys' cow cutting standings going into the May 15 final event at Shu-Fly Arena. Smith won both go-rounds May 8 at Thomason's in Jerome. Valley's Jamie Lancaster (73.5) tops the girls while Wood River's Thacker (45.5) is fifth and Hennefer (23.5) eighth.
