Reconstruction of Friedman Memorial Airport's single runway is "going real good," airport manager Rick Baird reported Monday.
He even hinted completion might well be ahead of the scheduled May 23 re-opening. However, Baird would not predict an early re-opening until work neared its completion.
The Hailey airport was closed April 24 so that the 6,600-foot runway could be ripped up and rebuilt. Erosion caused by moisture and years of wear and tear had begun to show in spots on the strip. The rebuilding, funded by the Federal Aviation Administration, would prevent increased safety hazards.
In another target date at Friedman, Baird said May 25 is the deadline for all persons with access to the airport behind the security fence—workers, pilots, and airline personnel—to make mandatory applications for new security clearances and badges required by the Transportation Security Administration.
Unless new badges are obtained, they'll be denied access to areas of the airport behind the security fence.
