Wood River High School's young golf team won a trip to the state 4A tournament in Moscow next week by placing second at the district meet Wednesday at the Rupert Country Club.

Wolverine golfers shot a combined 315, second only to tournament winner Pocatello with a score of 292. Century finished third with a combined score of 320, joining Wood River and Pocatello as state tournament qualifiers.

"We took second, which is a bit improvement," Wood River coach Bill Petzke said Thursday. "We've been improving every week so we were really happy to take second place."

Petzke said at least two Wood River golfers qualified for state individual play. Chance McCroskey shot a 76 to tie for fourth place and Crocket Stearns shot 78 for a sixth place tie.

Other team members who will compete at the state meet are Brian Town, Jonathon Hobbs and Danny Sundali.

Town is a junior, while McCroskey, Stearns, Hobbs and Sundali are freshmen, a situation that bodes well for the next few years of Wolverine golf competition and greatly pleases Petzke.

"That's the amazing thing," Petzke said. "Four of them are freshman and they're playing against guys who are growing beards. And they're totally dedicated, all five of them."

Also competing in the district tournament were Jerome, who finished fourth with a combined score of 326, Burley at fifth with 335, Minico at sixth with 367 and Preston at seventh with 403.

Pocatello's Jordan Allen shot a 71 for top individual honors.

State tournament play gets underway Monday and will conclude on Tuesday.
