How to mother the mothers

Plant a juicy one on her

Try plants this year rather than flowers for Mother?s Day. The love lasts longer.

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 13, and while you don't have to do the tried and true, mothers do like a bit of acknowledgement simply because it's there.

Firstly, all mothers love flowers and plants, and there are a few places that will be having specials this weekend for just this occasion.

You can honor Mama while giving to the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games by buying gifts at Giftback.com. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to the 2009 World Games in Idaho. The Games will receive more by ordering the sunflower basket featured on the Web site.

Webb Garden Center will have discounts at both the Bellevue and Ketchum stores, Friday and Saturday. Everything will be 10 percent off at the Hailey Nursery on Saturday. Sun Valley Garden Center in Bellevue is offering 20 percent off hanging baskets, through Sunday only. Big Wood Nursery, south of Ketchum, is also selling hangings baskets and more this weekend, to color Mom's world. Primavera Plants & Flowers are offering 20 percent discounts on orchid orders for Mother's Day.

If Ma is sporty, she might like a new bike. Sneak her outdated 10-speed out of the garage and trade it in at the 22nd annual Bike Swap at Backwoods Mountain Sports in Ketchum. The swap will be going on all weekend. For information, call 726-8818.

The Fabric Granary in Hailey is offering a Mother's Day Special on its Summer Sewing Classes through May 12. Sign up for the classes with a friend and receive a discount. For more details, contact Rebecca Mitchell at 788-1331.

Of course, there's nothing like actually shopping with mom. Try taking her for a change. Burnsie's Boca is offering a free gift with any purchase over $100, through Saturday.

Pure, in Ketchum, will be giving complimentary Mother's Day makeovers Saturday, May 12, featuring new spring colors. You can also enter Mom's name in a $100 gift certificate raffle. Call for an appointment, 727-9080.

Then head to the free Caritas Chorale concert of "Songs My Mother Taught Me," 3 p.m. Sunday, May 13, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Ketchum.

After all that, make a reservation or cook a nice dinner. Pamper the women in your life. After all, each woman is a mother in her own innately, nurturing way.
