Wood River softball team duels at district tilt

With a split on Monday, Wood River made it to the second day of the Great Basin Conference West District softball tournament.

Playing in Burley, the Wolverines and Bobcats opened with a great pitching duel between Hannah Gove (3 strikeouts) and Jacobi Koch. Both hurlers allowed only four hits, but Koch nabbed the shutout in a 2-0 victory.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines (11-14 overall, 4-4 league), picked up their first win of the season over Jerome, taming the Tigers 8-3.

Leading 1-0, Wood River (11 hits) broke open the game with a 4-run sixth and tacked on three more skins in the seventh. Gove (4 RBI) hammered three hits, including a pair of doubles. Angela Coleman (double) and Trista Behr tagged two hits each. Pitcher Samantha Engel surrendered four knocks in six frames, striking out 11.

With Minico eliminated after losses of 8-3 (Burley) and 17-3 (Jerome), the Tigers and Wolverines met on Tuesday with the winner advancing to play Burley. See the May 11 edition of the Idaho Mountain Express for final tournament results.

In the final game of the regular season in Hailey on Thursday, the Bobcats tallied seven unearned runs to edge the Wolverines 7-6.

Engel (7-8) was on the mark, scattering five hits and striking out 10. She was equally adept at the plate, jacking a homerun over the left-field fence as part of a three-hit afternoon. Trista Behr was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
