Andiamo ?Italian?

Movie showcases international issue of illegal adoptions

Russian films are some of the most visual and engrossing films ever made. "The Italian," a sort of Oliver Twist in Russian, is one of the featured movies in the 11th Annual Magic Lantern Spring Film Festival, which begins this weekend at the Ketchum movie theater. Released just four months ago, it should not be missed.

With a stylistic mix of documentary and fairy tale, the film involves a young boy who, though he is to be adopted by an young Italian family, desperately longs to find his birth mother.

Based on a true story, the 6-year-old boy, Vanya, grasps at his fantasy with a determination that is beguiling and intense. Directed by Russian filmmaker Andrei Kravchuk, the Dickensonian comparisons don't stop with a simple story line. The orphanage is run by a vile demon. There is a greedy child broker who arranges the illegal adoptions. An orphaned thug enforces a Darwinian rule over the younger children, and teenage girls are forced into prostitution.

The San Francisco Chronicle called the film, "a deeply moving experience, alternately funny and sad."
