Hailey tennis players ready for Capital test

Century handles Wolverines 8-4

There were some positive things learned from Wood River High School's trip to Jerome Saturday for a triangular prep tennis meet with Century of Pocatello and Pocatello.

First of all, coach Vicki Johnston's Wolverines learned they still have some hard work to do in order to catch the defending Great Basin Conference champions from Century.

Century swept the six singles matches to nail down its second 8-4 victory over last year's Great Basin runner-up squad from Wood River. Century's #1 girls' singles Liz Johnson recorded an upset win over Anna Chrysikopoulos.

Johnston said, "Obviously Century is our toughest competition. Playing them again gives us an idea of what we need to do for the conference meet (May 9 in Sun Valley).

"And it helps get us ready for the Capital Invitational this weekend in Boise."

Meanwhile, Wood River reversed an early-season 8-4 loss to Pocatello and beat the Indians 7-5 Saturday with four singles victories, a mixed doubles sweep and another strong #1 boys' doubles outing.

Boys' doubles Connor Fairman and Morgan Pike remained unbeaten with a win over Pocatello in addition to their straight-set triumph over the #1 Century team at Jerome. And #1 mixed Cory Rutkowski-Whitney Debree improved their undefeated mark to 11-0.

Wood River (6-4-1, 4-3 conference) played at Jerome Tuesday and goes to the Capital Invitational tournament in Boise Friday and Saturday. Monday's rained out league meet at Burley was rescheduled for May 2.
