U11 girls grab gold out of the ?Silver?

Team rallies for first place at soccer Performance Cup

They were playing in the Silver Division, but the Sawtooth United F.C. U11 girls' soccer team came away with the gold from last weekend's Boise Capitals Performance Cup tournament in Boise.

Sawtooth U11 rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat Spitfire of Utah 2-1 in Sunday's championship game. The big play might have been a save by SUFC goalkeeper Charlotte Currie on a well-struck Utah penalty kick with three minutes left in the first half and the Spitfire leading the game 1-0.

Hannah Dies of Sawtooth scored the equalizer 12 minutes into the second half and Riley Kilmartin tallied the game winner from close range with eight minutes left to play.

Coach Lynn Chaldu's Sawtooth squad had lost to the same Spitfire squad 1-0 in Saturday's closely contested pool play. In the preliminaries, Sawtooth placed second behind Utah with a 1-1-1 record.

SUFC opened Saturday's action with a 4-2 victory over Boise Blast as Haley Montgomery tallied a three-goal hat trick. Dies added a single score.

In Sawtooth's 1-1 tie with Utah Sparta, Ellie Punnett scored the goal. And central defender Katie Feldman preserved the tie for a much-needed point in the standings by making a goal line save after the Sawtooth keeper was beaten.

Chaldu praised Feldman, the only up-field player on the pitch for every minute of the four-game tournament, for her leadership in organizing the defense and leading the squad.

The coach said that midfielders Hayley Murach and Jordan Fitzgerald turned in tough performances. Defenders Whitney Engelmann, Arielle Rawlings and Erin Hennessy worked hard to preserve the final victory, Chaldu said.

Other teams in Boise

Ten other SUFC teams participated in the first club tournament of the spring season.

The U16 boys (2-1) captured 3-2 and 5-0 wins against stiff competition. Wyatt Bunce tallied a game-winning goal and Morgan Pike scored three times. Other scorers were Hector Lopez (2), Austin Cruz (2) and John Leavell. Cody Phelps had a great defensive effort.
