Pitching is all about hitting your spots and keeping the batters off balance, which is exactly how Wood River High School junior right-hander Hannah Gove handled the Minico Spartans Tuesday in Hailey.
Gove (13 K, 1 BB) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the host Wolverines throttled the Spartans 5-1 for a Great Basin Conference West season sweep in the game played at South Valley Sports Complex.
"Hannah was in complete command," said Wood River coach Dale Martin. "It's not velocity, it's where you throw it, and she threw it exactly where she was supposed to throw it."
Sparking Wood River's nine-hit attack was first baseman Samantha Engel, who crushed three doubles. Gove (2 hits, 3 RBI), Vanessa Valentine (2 hits, 2 runs) and Molly Floyd (RBI hit) contributed at the dish. Wood River, a 6-2 winner over Minico at Rupert on April 4, scored all five of its runs in the first three innings.
Defending Great Basin champion Wood River (8-9, 2-1 league) got a leg up on the rest of the closely bunched pack, including Minico (2-13, 1-3). Jerome (7-9, 2-1) traveled to Burley Thursday. Next Tuesday the Wolverines go to Burley (5-9, 1-1).
Wood River hosts Mountain Home Saturday for a single 11 a.m. home game. Wednesday's non-conference home game against Glenns Ferry was postponed by rain and rescheduled for Monday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. on the Hailey diamond.
