Carey?s girls share spotlight with boys

Panthers sweep Northside meet

It was a productive day for the Carey School boys' and girls' track and field teams Thursday during the weekly 10-school Northside Conference meet at ISDB in Gooding.

Carey (5 boys, 4 girls) didn't have as many first-place gold medals as Camas County of Fairfield (6 boys, 5 girls), but the Panthers used their depth to sweep the boys' and girls' titles on a cold, blustery day.

Amassing 62 points in the distance runs, 44 in the hurdles and 36 in relays, coach Lee Cook's Carey boys (192.3 points) won their second meet in two tries by a commanding 84 points over Camas (108.3).

"It was just like a flock of Carey runners together in the distances," said Cook, commenting on Carey's 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 3200-meter run and 1-3-4-5 result in the 1600m.

Junior Blake Whitby won the 1600m and 3200m, doing it in a photo finish over junior teammate Kade Peterson at the two-mile distance. Senior Cody Baird captured the 300m intermediate hurdles race for Carey's other individual gold.

Carey's boys won the 4x200m and 4x400m relays and finished second behind 4x100m winner Camas and medley champ Dietrich in the other relays.

For Camas County's Mushers, Chase Lee was the main man with first places in the 110m high hurdles, triple jump and high jump and the anchor leg in the 4x100m relay win. Ben McLam won the 100m dash and C.W. Stewart the discus.

It was quite a rise for the Carey girls, who had finished fifth among 10 teams in their first track meet April 4 on the Panther oval. Coach Lane Kirkland's Panthers got 33 field points and 38 in the relays to nip Camas by a 103-86 score.

"It was a good confidence builder for the girls," said Kirkland. "We had good points in the hurdles. The girls really worked together well in the relays. Taylor Whitby came from 20 meters behind in the medley and had a 64-second split to win by 15 to 20 meters.

"We'll still need to bring down our times to be competitive at the district meet."

Freshman Jessica Parke won the high jump while Carey captured three of the four relays by wide margins. Senior Serene Bingham posted her personal-best triple jump to finish second, just as she was second in 100m high hurdles.

Lindsey Peterson of Camas County swept the 100m and 200m short sprints and started the winning Musher 4x100m relay. Toni Wear and Hailey Gregory of Fairfield put hurdles in Camas County's camp.

Other double winners for the day included Danny Hill of Castleford (200m, 800m), Taylor Astle of Shoshone (1600m, 3200m) and Moe Hubsmith of Richfield (long, triple jumps).

Coming up, Carey hosts its second of three Northside Conference meets Thursday, April 19 at 2 p.m. at Derrick Parke Memorial Field. The Panthers won't have about 12 boys' and girls' athletes who left for San Diego Tuesday as part of the "To the Max" singing group.

Dietrich won't compete Thursday, but the rest of the Northside schools will, along with Mackay, Rockland, Oakley and Jackpot (Nev.).
