Track team keeps beating the clock

Wolverines compete at Jerome

Wood River High School girls' track coach J.C. Nemecek appreciated the effort of his rather small team during Friday's Dunne/Andrew Jerome Invitational five-school 4A/3A track and field meet at Jerome.

"Only five girls made the trip, but those five did an outstanding job—four of them combining for two firsts, two thirds, one fourth and one fifth," said Nemecek.

Julia Bowman set a personal record of 12 minutes, 52.09 seconds in winning the 3200-meter run. Delaney Fox captured first place in the 100m high hurdles in a personal-best 17.1 seconds despite hitting the final hurdle and turning her ankle.

Fox couldn't compete in her other events, but Bowman added a fourth place in 1600m in a personal-best 5:59.78. Sam Johnson chipped in with a pair of third places, both in personal records, in the 100m dash (13.2 seconds) and 200m (27.74).

Bailey Ireland also had a good day. She placed fifth in the 100m dash with a personal-best 13.57 seconds and also posted her best discus throw at 82-2, but didn't place.

Corbin Miniard continued his outstanding senior season by winning the shotput in 50-2 ½ and placing fifth in discus at 120-9 ½. Another valuable senior, Micah Floyd, was second in the tough 300m intermediate hurdles at 43.172 seconds.

Taylor Sundali set a personal-best of 4:52.9 in placing third at the 1600m distance. Rob Paris returned to place fifth twice in the jumps, 18-5 long jump and 38-6 triple jump.

Twin Falls (158) won the boys' meet over Jerome (76), Filer (54) and Skyview of Nampa (53) while Wood River stood in fifth place (20 points).

In the girls' team standings the Jerome Tigers and Twin Falls Bruins tied for first place (122) while Skyview was second (68) and Filer and Wood River tied for third (27).
