Welcome home to Hailey?s softball team

Wolverines end 12-game trip with 2-2 split

After a 12-game road trip to open the 2007 prep season, the Wood River High School softball team is happy to be home and playing 10 of its final 11 games at its South Valley Sports Complex field in Hailey.

Coach Dale Martin's 4A Wolverines (6-6, 1-1 league) hosted a very tough 3A Buhl Tribe squad (11-1) Tuesday afternoon for its home debut, then Pocatello arrives Friday, April 13 for a 4 p.m. twinbill.

Host Buhl defeated Burley 6-5 and 7-0 this past Saturday.

Wood River, winner of three of its last five, had a pretty good weekend of softball April 6-7 in eastern Idaho. The Wolverines split two games at Preston Friday including a 16-0 shutout, then divided a pair Saturday against Century in Pocatello, taking the nightcap 10-1.

Coach Martin was pleased with the hitting and scoring. Wood River outscored its 4A opponents 33-11 and out-hit the home teams 49-16 for the weekend. Hailey pitchers Samantha Engel (4-2) and Hannah Gove (2-4) delivered a pair of gems.

And the big hitter was sophomore Angela Coleman, 10 hits in 17 at-bats with six RBI.

Friday's opener at Preston was "a great all-around game—pitching, defense and offense," Martin said. Engel (7 K, 1 BB) tossed a four-inning one-hitter and Wood River out-hit Preston 15-1 in the 16-0 run-rule victory.

Hitters were Coleman (3-for-4, 3 runs, 4 RBI, 2 doubles), Molly Floyd (2 hits, 2 RBI), Engel (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI) and senior Sierra Lee (2 hits, 2 runs). The Wolverine defense didn't commit an error for the game.

In Friday's nightcap, Gove (5 hits, 6 K, 2 BB) acquitted herself very well in a pitcher's duel won by host Preston 3-2. Coleman, Gove and Trista Behr stroked Wood River's safeties.

The Wolverines led 2-0 in the fourth inning of Saturday's first game at Century, but the Diamondbacks struck for six runs—five unearned—in the home fourth and went on to the 7-5 triumph despite being out-hit by the Wolverines 14-5. Engel (5 hits, 9 K, 3 BB, 2 earned runs) absorbed the loss

It was all Wood River in Saturday's nightcap won by the visitors 10-1. Gove (3 K) didn't walk a batter and allowed only five hits. Coleman (4 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI) sparked the 17-hit attack. Those with three hits were Vanessa Valentine, Floyd and Gove, while Engel and Tasha Karst had two hits each.
