City headed to Great American Water Taste Test

Rather than popping open the bottles of champagne, Bellevue residents may instead choose to turn on their faucets in order to celebrate their city's victory in the Idaho Rural Water Association's annual Drinking Water Contest.

The contest, held March 12 to 14 in Boise, judged the water of participants on taste, clarity and odor.

Lacey Loughmiller, administrative clerk for Bellevue's Water and Sewer Department, represented Bellevue at the state capital and walked away with the top honors after submitting a water sample to the association's judges.

Loughmiller's announcement was met with applause at Bellevue's City Council meeting Thursday, March 22.

"It's amazing what hydrogen and oxygen can do in a two-to-one ratio," Councilman Chris Koch said.

Bellevue will compete in the seventh annual Great American Water Taste Test on May 1 in Washington, D.C. Bellevue Mayor Jon Anderson will accompany Loughmiller to the National Rural Water Association's Rural Water Rally, where they will present a glass of Bellevue water, hoping it will best those of the other 49 competing states.

In addition to the competition, Loughmiller and Anderson will meet with Idaho Sens. Larry Craig and Mike Crapo and Rep. Mike Simpson.

With rural water appropriations in danger of being cut out of next year's budget, Loughmiller is keen to discuss the importance of continued funding.

"We need this for developing sources, research and staff education, so that we can receive technical assistance from Idaho Rural Water," she said.
