Elitsa Storey earns two national disabled titles

Sun Valley Ski Team product Elitsa Storey, 19, went into last week's 2007 Hartford U.S. Disabled Alpine Championships with no national titles in her three-year career on the U.S. Disabled Ski Team.

Now she has two.

Storey, the 5-3, 120-pound three-tracker (using an outrigger and a lone ski) originally from Bulgaria, completed her strong end-of-season progress by winning Thursday's giant slalom by nearly three seconds in Women's Standing and adding Saturday's slalom national title by over six seconds.

The 2006 Paralympian from Hailey's Wood River High School was one of only four double national title winners at Waterville Valley in the Granite State—including World Cup overall champion Stephani Victor of Park City, Utah who won the GS and SL golds in the Women's Sit-Ski category.

Freestyle nationals at Killington

Sun Valley freestyle skiers had good efforts at the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships March 22-25 in Killington, Vt.

Fresh off a seventh place in halfpipe at the FIS Freestyle World Junior Championships in Switzerland, Ross Falcone finished eighth in Thursday's men's halfpipe finals on Bear Mountain. The winner was last year's silver medalist David Wise, 16, of Reno, Nev.

Former Sun Valley Freestyle Team racer Sophia Schwartz of Waterville Valley, N.H. was a strong second behind Connecticut-born Jen Hudak of Park City, Utah in Thursday's women's pipe finals. Schwartz was also the silver medalist in halfpipe at Junior Worlds.

In Friday's moguls finals, Shannon Bahrke of Tahoe City, Ca. won her fifth U.S. title and Holt Haga of Boise was the men's winner for his first national crown. Falcone was 28th in the men's event while Schwartz was 13th and Sun Valley's Katie Fieguth 27th.

Falcone, the only athlete at nationals to compete in all four disciplines, posted another strong finish with a seventh place in Saturday's men's aerials won by Jeret "Speedy" Peterson of Boise.

No locals made it out of Sunday's dual moguls qualifying rounds. But Nic Hanscom was 15th, Falcone 17th, Broc Sheue 25th and Shane Cordeau 31st of 42 men, while Schwartz was 8th and Fieguth 18th of 40 women in the qualifying. The winners were Sho Kashiwa of Nevada for the men and Shelly Robertson of Reno, women. Sun Valley's Chloe Gordon also competed at nationals.

Versus televises coverage of the U.S. championships Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m. MT.
