Parrish ?Race for Locals? is back

Bumps, SG for fun on Baldy

They call it the "Race for Locals," and it's also a race for cash. First and foremost, though, it's a good way to end the Baldy ski season with two days of bumps and sheer speed.

Lane Parrish certainly would have liked it.

A classic Sun Valley persona of the 1970s and 1980s, Parrish was a speed and bump skier and a movie stuntman who died at the age of 33 in a 1990 plane crash near Twin Falls.

This year's event is the 15th annual Lane Parrish Memorial.

Registration continues through Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m. at Apple's Bar & Grill in Warm Springs for the Parrish Memorial alpine ski races set for Saturday and Sunday, March 31-April 1 on Baldy.

This year's race features a cash purse of $7,000 going to the top skiers in Saturday's "Bumps for Bucks," and Sunday's "New Diamond Sun" super giant heat down Greyhawk, organizer Ken Corrock said.

Mogul racing is planned for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ("or when it gets soft," Corrock said) on a run to be determined. The top 15 men and top five women in the single moguls format vie for $3,000 in cash.

Air, turns and overall impression will be judged in the moguls, highest score winning.

The Parrish Memorial super giant slalom is Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. on the one-minute-long Greyhawk course through Cozy and Hemingway runs.

After Sunday's Parrish Memorial first SG run, the "New Diamond Sun Dash for Cash" will feature the top 15 men and top five women from the earlier heat. Up for grabs is $4,000 for the "New Diamond Sun" super giant slalom second run.

The friendly, local competition provides funds for Soldier Mountain Racing and the Sun Valley Freestyle Team. Entry fee of $40 per person includes both the bumps and SG.

Skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders in several age groups are invited to participate. The SG and bumps age groups are J3 and younger (12-and-under), J2 and older (13-19), 20-39, 40-59 and 60-and-older.

Parties at Apple's Bar & Grill will be held after the bump races Saturday and also after Sunday's SG and combined winners are determined. Prizes will go to class winners.

Combined winners will have the lowest scores when class placings of the Parrish SG and bumps are finally added up.

Last year there were 96 racers in the Parrish SG and 78 in the bumps. Kurtis Fieguth won the bumps. Carl Rixon Jr., 24, was a .04-second winner over Travis Svensrud, 27, of Bozeman, Mt. in the Parrish SG. Svensrud ($1,200) and his wife Alex Munteanu Svensrud ($500) were the "New Diamond Sun Dash for Cash," winners.
