Gates opened for discount ski pass holders

Warm weather and clear skies accelerate snow melt on mountain

With summer-like temperatures making an earlier than expected appearance and snow cover fast dissipating on Bald and Dollar mountains, Sun Valley Co. announced this week that discount ski pass holders will receive bonus skiing this year.

"We felt it was only fair to those who bought passes that they be able to use them," said Jack Sibbach, spokesman for Sun Valley Co.

So far, no runs on Baldy have been officially closed for the season.

"The plan is to keep as much as we can open through April 8, and that includes Dollar," Sibbach said. After April 8, Sun Valley Co. will see where snow levels are and re-evaluate its options.

April 15 was initially slated as the last day of the ski season, but "it all depends on the weather, which right now doesn't look good, except for sunshine," Sibbach said.

As of this Sunday, March 18, changes to several ski passes will be in effect. Holders of the 20/20 Pass can use all of their remaining days with no restrictions. Weekend Discount Card holders can use their cards seven days a week. Blaine County Discount Cards will then be valid for late-season rates.

As for Weekend and Season discount cards, late-season discount rates will go into effect on Saturday, March 24. Early/Late Season Passes also will be valid on this day, eight days earlier than planned. The pass allows unlimited skiing in the early and late stages of the ski season.

While the current weather pattern may change, the shifting of pass dates is "just in case," Sibbach said.

In addition, the Sun Valley Nordic and Snowshoe Center will remain open through Sunday, March 18, weather and conditions permitting.
