After grabbing an early 5-0 lead, the Wood River High School girls' softball team faltered in the final innings to lose a 7-6 heartbreaker in Jerome to the Tigers on Wednesday.
Wood River sophomore Samantha Engel, who pitched a no-hitter against the Glenns Ferry Pilots last Friday, didn't have her best stuff against the Tigers, giving up six runs, three in the third inning and another three in the fifth.
She was replaced in the sixth by junior hurler Hannah Gove, who unfortunately took the loss by giving up a game winning run in the seventh and final frame.
Wood River went into the seventh down by 6-5, but scored a run to even it up at six apiece. But two hits and an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning and a single by Elizabeth Johnson knocked in the game winner.
Ashley Morrell pitched all seven innings for the Tigers to record the win.
The victory lifted Great Basin Conference West rival Jerome to 4-1, 1-0 conference.
Wood River is now 3-2, 0-1 in conference play. Engel's pitching record is 2-0, while Gove is 1-2.
The Wolverines played the Bruins in Twin Falls on Thursday.
