Racers enjoy new snow at Soldier Mountain

Ski area stages two days of downhill races

Rarely can you powder ski in the morning and race downhill in the afternoon, but that's what happened Tuesday at Fairfield's Soldier Mountain Ski Area during the 10th running of the Sammis/Camas event.

Six to eight inches of new snow greeted race organizers Tuesday morning, so Chief of Race Ken Corrock sent the Sammis/Camas contestants out powder skiing and welcomed them back in the afternoon for the actual downhill races.

"It was quite a feat, really a minor miracle, to have the event at all because of the new snow falling during the morning and winds shutting down the upper chair," Corrock said. "However the wind subsided and the snow stopped and we had the event."

Park City's Randall Malin (1:44.02) led 43 Sammis/Camas downhillers ranging in age from five to 78, and Joanne Zwingenberg (1:58.93) earned the perpetual trophies for the women. Third-place finisher Deeder Petersen gave a moving speech at the awards ceremony.

Rounding out the Sammis/Camas podium were runner-up Rich Slabinski of Park City for the men, Linda Crowell from California and Dasha Kadulova from Park City for women.

Four kids came with their parents and participated in Tuesday's race. Jack Knutsen, 11, from Portland, Ore., had the fastest time from a lower start. Mike Levy's son Mikey did the race, as did Natalia Smith who came with her father Jed Smith from Hawaii. Youngest was 5-year-old Isaac Mozen, with parents Eddie and Barbara Mozen.

Wednesday's weather was sunny and foggy for the 30-gate USSA Intermountain Masters downhill #1 won by Colorado's Don Johnson (1:57.14) over Mike Levy (1:57.65), and Linda Crowell (2:10.82) over Zwingenberg (2:13.92). Taking downhill #2 were Scott Levy (1:55.35) and Crowell (2:14.44).

In addition to the downhills, a one-run slalom race was staged with Franz Fuchsberger (33.81) and Kadulova (36.31) posting the fastest times. Super combined winners from adding the #2 DH and SL times together were Don Johnson (2:32.78) and Kadulova (2:51.25). They won 10 free ski tunes from Ski Tek. Scott Levy came in third with a classic "Old School" run reminiscent of the 1980s, according to Corrock.

Results follow for the two days of racing, with racer name and time and in the case of the Sammis/Camas, age class finish in parentheses:
