Education needed at jail

Education needs for our new jail facility are of primary importance.

About 20 years ago, I taught a GED-Basic Skills class for inmates at the current jail facility. At that time there was space for an appropriate conference room with tables and chairs to teach the skills to better the students' lives. Students who are members of our community and return to live among us.

This past spring I was asked to help again. The only teaching environment that was available was the drunk tank. The space features a wall mural of pink elephants, a bunk bed and a latrine. An extra folding chair was added to sit on. The subject matter of math and literature were discussed, and tests were administered to the student who sat on the bed. For those of you who have had a recent tour, you probably get the picture with a clear perspective. My perspective is that it is hard to raise an individual's perception, provide learning skills and personal self-esteem when the teaching surroundings are so inappropriate.

Our tax dollars will be well spent by improving the educational space for inmates who need a second chance. I have been assured that this will happen with a new facility and support such a process.

Thanks you for your time.
