Picabo-based ultrarunner Randy Gehrke is organizing an international benefit March 10-11 to raise money for Danelle Ballengee, an adventure racer seriously injured in December.
The first-ever International 24-Hour Treadmill Championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11 based locally at Blaine County Fitness Center in Hailey.
Gehrke hopes to attract the interest of other fitness centers across the country. He is asking for a $50 entry fee for solo participants and $25 for each member of a relay team. You can also go for an hour on a 15% grade and donate $25.
Certificates will be given to all those who enter a time and place after 24 hours of treadmill running or walking.
Ballengee fell 60 feet while trail running near Moab, Utah in early December and was stranded in a remote redrock canyon for 52 hours—until her dog Taz led searchers from the trailhead to her location.
She broke her pelvis and is confined to a wheelchair for three to six months at the home of her parents in Evergreen, Colo. "Danelle faces an extremely hard road ahead and her medical bills are staggering," said Gehrke.
