Hailey boys head into Great Basin action

WRHS splits with Challis, Kimberly

The New Year started with a couple of buzzsaw games for the Wood River High School boys' varsity basketball team.

Playing with great desire from the outset, coach John Radford's Wolverines (4-6, 0-0 league) were the buzzsaw Friday in a 48-33 non-conference home win over Challis (5-2), ranked third in the 2A polls.

It was a season-best performance for Wood River's 6-5 junior center Erik Jacobson (10.5 ppg), who scored 12 of his career-best 21 points in the first half and dominated the paint.

Helping to avenge a 59-50 loss at Challis Dec. 16 were Cory Rutkowski 6 points, Matt Staskiewicz 6, Travis Beckman 4, Pat Patterson 3 and Ross Parsons 2. David Sibrian (6 points) returned from a foot injury and drilled a couple of 3-pointers.

Challis senior Frank Phillips (17 points) nailed three of the seven Viking 3-pointers.

But the host Kimberly Bulldogs cranked up their defensive buzzsaw on Wood River Saturday. Kimberly (4-4, 0-2 SCIC) built a 34-15 halftime cushion en route to a 57-42 non-league win squaring the season series at one game apiece.

Jason Mumm (14 points) topped the balanced Bulldog attack that was helped by 23-for-32 charity shooting. Wood River shot a season-best 14-for-16 at the stripe but didn't have enough attempts to keep pace.

Jacobson scored 12 points for Hailey, Staskiewicz (10.5 ppg) chipped in 10, Rutkowski (11.7 ppg) added 8, Joel Perron 6, Dan Sibrian 2, Dave Sibrian 2 and Parsons 2.

Wood River debuted its Great Basin Conference West season Tuesday with a home game against Minico (4-6, 0-1 league) on the Hailey floor. Minico lost 80-79 in overtime at home to Jerome before Christmas and then won at Twin Falls 56-48 last Friday night.

Radford's squad hosts Filer's Wildcats (2-8) Saturday, Jan. 13 in Hailey. Visiting Wood River trounced Filer 65-35 Dec. 1.

Then, the Wolverines travel to Jerome (6-4, 1-0) and top-ranked 4A Burley (10-1, 0-0) on Jan. 17 and Jan. 19. Defending Great Basin West champ Burley, averaging 66.7 ppg, won its first seven games, lost to Pocatello 56-54 then beat Middleton, Preston and Century. Burley hosted Jerome Tuesday.
