Skier numbers holding steady

Despite a leaner snowpack on Bald and Dollar mountains this year compared to the 2005-2006 ski season, skier counts at Sun Valley Resort are holding their own.

Through New Year's Day, 101,819 skier and snowboarder days were logged on the two mountains. Last year at this time, the number stood at 104,293. This year's December skier count stands at 90,573, only 112 fewer than last year's 90,685.

"Business has been good," said Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach. "We had a lot of great comments about the quality of the skiing we had. And that was very important for us. We're off to a good start."

Sibbach said what most mountain town dwellers know: Skier numbers throughout the season are largely dependent on Mother Nature.

"If someone can tell me what the weather's going to be like the next three months, then I can predict the skiing count," he said.
