The city of Sun Valley approved a $30,000 independent contract with the Ketchum Parks and Recreation Department at Atkinson Park on Wednesday, Dec. 13, but not before raising questions as to why the contract has ballooned from last year's $10,000 agreement.
The money will go to reimburse Ketchum for youth programs and services enjoyed by Sun Valley residents over fiscal year 2006-2007, which started Oct. 31.
Ketchum Parks and Recreation Director Kirk Mason said he hopes Sun Valley would contribute more to his department's efforts.
"I do appreciate the fact they realize the importance of programs for the kids," Mason said. "I think, at least for now, it's their fair share."
The Sun Valley City Council was curious as to the reason for the three-fold increase in money requested from last year.
"It seems to me there are actually less kids in Sun Valley today than in past years," said Sun Valley Councilman Blair Boand, a father.
According to Mason, however, Sun Valley's youth numbers have remained steady and may even be on the rise. Last year it was estimated that 12 percent of youth visitors to the Ketchum recreation complex were from Sun Valley, and this year that number is estimated at 13 percent, Mason said.
It is difficult to determine exact figures because the only time residency questions are raised is when a child first signs up for recreational activities and the parents' official residency is requested, Mason said.
As it stands, the city of Ketchum subsidizes youth recreation with more than $350,000 per year, according to Ketchum city officials. In light of the 13 percent Sun Valley participation estimate, $30,000 is not an unreasonable number, Mason said.
The contract states the money will be used to offer Blaine County youths numerous sports and cultural programs, expand youth recreational programs, and to develop new recreational facilities.
Projects currently in the works include a recreational fountain at Atkinson Park and the addition of street-oriented skateboard features at Guy Coles Skate Park. Mason hopes to have the skate park addition completed by spring 2007.
