Cutthroats erase deficit, but fall to Chiefs 47-45

Sho-Ban visits Sun Valley for two games

The lid was on the basket for the cold-shooting Community School boys' basketball team in the first half of Tuesday's non-league game against the run-and-gun Sho-Ban Chiefs at The Fish Tank in Sun Valley.

With his team trailing 27-12 at halftime against a state tournament-caliber squad, Cutthroat coach Mike Wade urged patience. He told his players that their shots would begin to fall if they kept working hard.

He was right. The Chiefs lead mushroomed to 22 early in the third quarter, but six different Cutthroat players scored field goals to slice the huge lead to 41-31 at the break. The trapping Sun Valley defense forced 16 Chiefs turnovers after the half.

Then, with senior captain Christian Cairncross (6 points, 4 boards, 4 steals, 2 assists) finally finding the range and nailing two 3-pointers, the Cutthroats ripped off an 8-0 run in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter for an improbable 45-45 tie.

Wade's team even had the ball for a potential game-winning shot in the final moments. But Sho-Ban's Trevor Beasley made a steal at midcourt and fed fellow senior Cody Anderson (13 points) for the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Sho-Ban survived 47-45.

Sun Valley's Mac Whittington (12 points, 20 rebounds) had a huge game on the glass and Spencer Harris (9 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists) continued his fine all-around play.

Helping the cause were Max Harris (4 points, 3 boards, 3 steals), point guard Ian Ingram (7 points, 3 rebounds), Eddy Albarran (5 points, one 3-pointer) and Lucas Vorsteveld (2 points, 2 boards).

Wade's squad visits Carey today to end its pre-holiday slate, and the Cutthroat girls will play the Panthers in Friday's 6 p.m. game.

Big quarter lifts Lady Chiefs

A season-best 52 points was the good news for The Community School girls' varsity basketball team Tuesday in its non-conference home game against Sho-Ban in Sun Valley.

The bad news was the third quarter, when the Lady Chiefs (4-2) threw on a furious press that resulted in a 32-7 advantage in just the eight minutes of the third. Freshman guard Shayann Johnson scored 14 of her game-high 28 points in the period.

Sho-Ban breezed to a 72-52 victory that kept the Cutthroats (0-6, 0-3 league) winless, although 10 Sun Valley players ended up scoring.

Caroline Fairchild had 11 points, Amaya Ingram 9, Cody Curran 8, Jessie Curran 6, Emily Eshman 5, Chloe Lynn 4, Elizabeth Beesley 4, Hannah Hennessy 2, Jean Montgomery 2 and Marin Shepardson 1. The Cutthroats shot a season-high 16-for-31 from the charity stripe.
