Carey?s D.J. Simpson is adept on the basketball court as well as on the gridiron. Simpson scored 10 points in the Panthers 77-58 season opener victory in Oakley.

Different sport, same kids, same results—Carey wins again.

After winning a State 1A Division 2 eight-man football championship two weeks ago, the Carey High School Panthers hopped from the gridiron to the basketball court without missing a stride, winning their season opener 77-58 in Oakley Wednesday night.

The Panthers led throughout, outscoring the Hornets 21-14 in the first period and leading at half 38-29. Carey extended its lead to 58-42 in the third, and outscored Oakley 19-16 in the fourth for the 77-58 final tally.

The Panther victory was typical of the way the Carey high school athletes play—lots of players contributing, lots of players scoring.

Allen Peck led the Panthers with 20 points. He was followed by juniors D.J. Simpson and Tyler Parke with 10 points each. Junior Blake Whitby and senior Cody Baird contributed nine points apiece, while junior Kade Peterson pitched in with eight.

Also scoring were junior Scott Ellsworth with six points, senior James Carlson with four and junior Connor Rivera with one.

The Oakley Hornets were led by Colton Bedke who scored 24.

The Panthers next host the Carey Holiday Basketball Tournament today and Saturday. Tonight at 8 they take on archrivals the Mackay Miners. Other teams participating in the tournament are Challis and Lighthouse Christian Academy of Twin Falls. They face off at 8 tonight in the old gym. The winners will meet for the championship game Saturday at 8 p.m. in the new gym.

The Wolverines next play tonight at 7:30 in Filer

Cutthroats fall to Hansen 55-32

The Community School Cutthroats lost their season opener on the road in Hansen 55-32 Wednesday night.

The Cutthroats trailed throughout, being down 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 27-15 at half. Managing but four points again the third quarter, Community School trailed 38-19 at the end of the period.

The Cutthroats scored 13 points in the final quarter, but it was too little too late.

Mac Whitington led the Cutthroats with 12 points. Christian Cairncross scored six, while Max Harris and Spencer Harris added four each. Ian Ingram and Si Park each chipped in with three.
