An anonymous donor's gift has opened up a challenge to the community to support the Wood River Community YMCA.

Every dollar up to $250,000 that is contributed or pledged during this holiday season will be matched one-for-one, helping raise $500,000 for the YMCA, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The donor, who wishes to honor the ancestral name, Human, according to a news release, hopes the contribution will prompt others to financially support the recreation complex.

Construction of the 84,000-square-foot facility is under way at the corner of Warm Springs and Saddle roads. It is scheduled for completion next fall.

Funds from the "Human Spirit Campaign" will be used to build all three phases of the new YMCA facility: the aquatics center, the central facility, and the ice rink and events center.

Seventy percent of the total capital campaign goal has been raised.

"While the YMCA has undertaken the construction of this exciting new facility for the community, the real purpose is caring for one another," the news release says. "The YMCA's mission strives to help all people develop themselves in spirit, mind and body."

All donors to the YMCA's capital campaign will be recognized on a donor recognition wall that will be permanently featured inside the YMCA's lobby.

Ketchum voters in 2004 approved a city proposal to lease to the YMCA approximately one-quarter of the city-owned Park and Ride lot.

The Ketchum City Council approved the applications in September 2005.

The YMCA will pay $1 per year to the city over the 99-year lease period.
