Roland Gunnar Johnson

Roland Gunnar Johnson of Bellevue passed away from lung cancer Oct. 25, 2006, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Roland was born in Kirkland, Wash., on June 7, 1944. He was raised in Vincent, Wash., and graduated from Tolt High School in 1962.

Roland was a highly skilled chef. He first came to the Wood River Valley in the early 1970s and worked at the Sun Valley Lodge during the latter part of the Janss era. He subsequently worked for several years at the Christiania and later at Felix's and Peter's restaurants in Ketchum.

Roland was a very private man. He loved this area and was an avid outdoorsman. He skied, camped and rode his bike at least 10 miles a day. He was a truly talented soul. His creative and musical abilities were extensive. In addition to his culinary skills, he was next best known as an accomplished gardener. His garden was the envy of his neighborhood, but it also was a source of his unbounded generosity. He shared its rewards with his friends and neighbors.

Roland touched many lives during his stay here on earth. He made many friends, and he will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his sisters, Sylvia Brown, of Whidbey Island; Claudia Kaelin and her husband, Vince, of Duvall; eight nieces and nephews; and aunt Helen Sinnema of Vincent, Wash.

Graveside services were held at the Bellevue Park Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 28.
