Wood River gridders pick up post-season honors

The Wood River football team paid homage to its season and players at an awards banquet at the high school last Wednesday.

Several players (16) were also recognized on the 2006 Fourth District All-Conference teams, featuring standouts selections as voted on by the coaches from the Great Basin Conference West; Wood River, Minico, Jerome and Burley.

Hailey's first team selections were running back Matt Libert (1,018 yards/6 TDs), offensive lineman Casey Bennett, defensive linemen Anthony Quarles and Tyler Hendricks, outside linebacker Erik Jacobson, defensive backs Jeff Conover and Danny Ward. State record-holder Cory Rutkowski was a first-team pick at placekicker and earned a second team nod for punter.

Second team picks were quarterback Danny Kramer (1,007 yards/10 TDs), wide receiver Danny Ward (616 yards/6 TDs), tight end Erik Jacobson, offensive lineman Corbin Miniard, inside linebackers Jared Rade and Colin Hand.

Honorable mention went to Chris Chapman (OL), Carter Stewart (DB), Drew Anderson (DB) and Vincent Vertneg (WR).

Gary Krumm of Jerome and Tim Perrigot of Minico shared Coach of the Year honors.

Wood River went 4-5 in 2006, falling in the first round of the 4A preliminary playoffs to Bonneville, 21-6, but Wednesday night was devoted to honoring Mike Glenn's boys and the hard work they put into the season.

Jeff Conover was voted the Bob Shay Most Inspirational player. Tyler Hendricks was named Most Improved. The Coach's Award was given to Erik Jacobson.

Cory Rutkowski was Special Teams Player of the Year. Varsity position awards were given to Anthony Quarles (DL), Danny Ward (WR/DB), Matt Libert (OB), Casey Bennett (OL), and Jared Rade (LB).

Medallions were given to 2006 captains Corbin Miniard, Danny Ward, Jeff Conover and Travis Beckman.

Prep team honors went to Micah Floyd and Luke McNees on offense, and Bryce Reese and Pat Hurley on defense.

Freshmen awards were bestowed upon Jordan Flolo and Matt Lichtenberg for Most Improved. Tanner Orchard was Offensive Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year was Tyler Peters. 2006 captains were Zeb Glenn, Tanner Orchard, Tyler Peters and Kevin Abbott.
