All that jazz is in Sun Valley

Swing ?n? Dixie Jazz Jamboree brings on the music

Perhaps it's the dedication of those who come year after year. Maybe it's just in the blood or simply the music. But for whatever the reason the Sun Valley Swing 'n' Dixie Jazz Jamboree is one event that few people hate to miss.

In its 16th year, the five days of bands and fans who converge on the Sun Valley Resort and surrounding lodges are always ready to experience something new and support their old favorite bands and musicians.

From all over the world bands, musicians and dancers fill up a non-stop schedule of performances with the added attraction of local performers whose history and experience with the festival make it even more special.

This year the festival will hold two dance competitions for ballroom dancing and a Lindy Hop with prizes for winners. Another addition to the program is an "Oh, Canada Day" that will showcase five bands from Canada to celebrate the relationship between the U.S. and Canada.

A special performance of jazz through the generations will feature new and old generations of jazz musicians.

"It will be hysterical, and I'm sure there will be lots of jokes," said festival director Carol Loehr about featuring jazz musicians 80 and older. "There will be five different leaders. It should be a real hoot. This is brand new to the festival and probably a one-time-only thing, but it's going to be a crackup."

Sponsored by Albertson's and continuing from last year, the festival will also offer college credit for attending and experiencing the festival. Credit can be received through Idaho State University and, if approved before the festival, it is possible to receive credit for an independent study. There is a one-hour seminar with band members where students will be asked to write a critique.

The festival will be held at a variety of locations in and around Sun Valley. For more information, call (866) 478-5299 or visit sunvalleyjazz.com.
