Hear ye, hear ye

It's as close as it comes to an old fashioned Town Hall meeting for political candidates to show their stuff up close with voters—the Mountain Express-sponsored Pizza and Politics forum next Wednesday.

Four candidates running for Blaine County Commission will present their cases and debate their differences (if any) on how to manage one of Idaho's fastest growing counties.

The program begins at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Old County Courthouse conference room.

Candidates are Democrat Sarah Michael, the commission's current chair running for re-election; her challenger, Independent Mickey Garcia; Democrat Larry Schoen, chair of the county's Planning and Zoning Commission; and Republican Dale Ewerson. The last two are both running for the seat of retiring Commissioner Dennis Wright.

Sooner or later, virtually every resident of Blaine County is touched or affected by decisions of the County Commission—taxes, highway problems, the future of Friedman Memorial Airport, planning and zoning, the spread of developments into agricultural lands, courts, law enforcement.

With free pizza to munch on, voters can hear the unvarnished, undistilled ways these candidates would manage the wide range of issues confronting Blaine County.

And therein lies the importance of this type of freewheeling public meeting: Candidates must respond to questions and not conduct their campaigns through advertisements and broadcast commercials.

Voters should make sure to attend. Seeing and hearing candidates should give a clear insight into which deserve votes based on their competence and understanding of the issues.
