Youth gridders blank Meridian 22-0

Nine-year-olds remain unbeaten

The Wood River Youth Football "Freshman" 9-year-olds remained unbeaten last Saturday with a 22-0 victory over Meridian White at the football fields in Hailey.

Cameron Benson set the tone from the first play of the game, running for the first of his two touchdowns. Jake Jorgensen also pounded in a touchdown for Wood River before a large crowd of fans.

For the third time this season, the Wood River defense held its opponent scoreless. Critical to the shutout victory were aggressive play and containment from cornerbacks Logan Portillo, Connor Hayes, Jack Rizzo and Elijah Lindley.

Austin Shetler had a breakout game, adding an interception to seal the triumph.

Game balls went to offensive player Sam Burns for his sweet "make it look easy" point-after catch and to defensive player Elijah Lindley for his 110% containment performance.

"This is a special group of kids," said head coach Kenny Ward about the first-year tackle football squad. "Our next game (this Saturday against Mountain Home) will be our toughest opponent yet. I look forward to bringing it to them and see how our kids stack up."

Wood River's final home game is Saturday, Oct. 14, at noon on the Hailey gridiron.
