Bellevue incumbents facing no challengers

City election set for Nov. 7

The deadline to register as a candidate for the office of mayor or one of the three City Council seats up for election in Bellevue this coming November has come and gone.

Prospective candidates had until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept 29, to turn in petitions to run for office in Bellevue.

As of the deadline, however, only incumbents had submitted petitions, Bellevue City Clerk Dee Barton said Tuesday.

Those candidates are Bellevue Mayor Jon Anderson and City Council members Shaun Mahoney, Chris Koch and Tammy Eaton.

Barring anything unforeseen, the upcoming term will be Anderson's second two-year term in office as mayor.

For incumbent City Council candidates Mahoney and Koch, the upcoming 2007-2008 term will be their second in office. For Eaton, who was named to the City Council in 2001, the next term would be her third full term in office.

Earlier this year, Eaton made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for the Blaine County Commission's south county seat.

There is still another way someone can file to run as a candidate in Bellevue this November, Barton said.

"They could still file a declaration as a write-in candidate, but they will not be on the ballot," Barton said.

Potential office seekers have until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, to submit the necessary forms to run as write-in candidates, she said. Those forms are available at City Hall, Barton added.

The upcoming elections will mark the first time the city of Bellevue holds its municipal elections in November.

Last spring, a bill to bring the date Bellevue holds its city elections into conformity with the rest of the state was approved by the Idaho Legislature and signed into law by former Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.

With the bill's passage, all future city elections in Bellevue will now be held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of November in each year, the same date cities throughout Idaho conduct their own municipal elections.

As Idaho's only remaining charter city, Bellevue was required to gain the approval of the Idaho Legislature before enacting such a change in its elections.
