District soccer tourneys begin this week

Cutthroat boys improve to 11-1-1

The 4A and 3A Fourth District boys' and girls' prep soccer tournaments started this week, with a slew of important post-season games scheduled for Wood River High School and Community School teams.

At stake are berths in the State 4A and 3A soccer tournaments Oct. 19-21 in Meridian.

Here's a look:

Community School soccer

Girls' 3A: The top-seeded Community School Cutthroats (6-2-2, 6-0 league) have a first-round bye in the five-team tournament. The Sun Valley girls will wait until Monday when they will host the winner of Saturday's first-round game between #3 Declo vs. #4 Gooding. Championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The Cutthroats, ranked second in the Idahosports.com 3A girls' poll behind Teton, complete their regular season Thursday at American Falls. They play Gooding in a varsity game today, Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Sagewillow Farms.

Boys' 3A: The #2-seeded Community School Cutthroats will entertain #7 Declo Saturday, Oct. 7 in an 11 a.m. first-round game at Browning Field. The winner will play again Monday, Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m. and the Cutthroats will host with a victory Saturday. Championship game of the seven-team meet is Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The Cutthroats (11-1-1), ranked second in the Idahosports.com 3A boys' poll behind Bliss, complete their regular season today, Wednesday against Gooding. Bliss (12-0-1) earned the regular-season title by default, since there was a mix-up in assessing Gooding's varsity/junior varsity status.

Because of the mix-up, the Bliss-Community School game originally scheduled for today, Wednesday was canceled, and the Cutthroat varsity is hosting Gooding instead, playing at 5 p.m. today at Browning Field.

Monday, the Cutthroat boys won their fifth straight game (by a 25-2 margin) since their 1-1 home tie with Bliss Sept. 15, by a 7-1 score at Filer. "Man of the Match" Caleb Sonneland (3 goals), Alden Remington, Travis Stone, Tanner Flanigan and Mac Whittington scored.

Wood River soccer

Girls' 4A: Top-ranked Wood River (13-0-1, 6-0 league) played #4-seeded Minico (3-12-2, 1-5) in the first round of the four-team tournament Tuesday, Oct. 3 in Hailey, while #2 Burley (3-3) hosted #3 Jerome (2-4) Tuesday.

If Wood River beat Minico, the Wolverines will host the Burley-Jerome winner Thursday, Oct. 5 on the Hailey pitch, with the championship game scheduled for Monday, Oct. 9.

Boys' 4A: Second-seeded Wood River (4-9-1, 3-3) will host #3 Jerome (4-9-2, 2-4) Thursday, Oct. 5 on the Hailey pitch in the first round of the Great Basin tournament, with #1 Burley (14-0-0, 6-0) hosting #4 Minico (3-13-0, 1-5) Thursday.

Second-round games will be played Friday, the loser-out contest Saturday and the championship game Monday.
