The Carey High School Panthers lost two volleyball matches at home Tuesday evening in tri-meet play against the Shoshone Indians and the Wendell Trojans.

The young Panther team hung tough but was defeated by Northside Conference rival Shoshone in three sets 25-15, 25-13 and 25-10.

The Panthers took the first set against Wendell 25-21, but dropped the second 17-25 and lost the third in a heartbreaker 14-16.

The Indians took top tri-meet honors by defeating Wendell 25-16 and 25-15.

Carey now stands at 4-11 overall and 1-4 in league play.

In JV action, Shoshone defeated Carey 25-18 and 26-24, but Carey rebounded against Wendell winning the match 25-15 and 25-14.

Panther coach Kathy Whitworth said her varsity team continues to improve as the season progresses. Short on varsity experience, the girls "have good attitudes and they keep their heads about them," she said.

Describing this year as a "building season," Whitworth said: "They're coming along really good. We're only half way through—by the end of the season we should be pulling it together and doing pretty well."

Whitworth said her team was sluggish against the Shoshone Indians, but played well against Wendell and was just a "few errors" away from winning the match.

She particularly lauded the play of Serene Bingham, who served 10 consecutive points in the first set against Wendell. Brittany Hennefer blocked well and Emily Olsen and Jennifer Cenarrusa were solid hitters, Whitworth said.

The Panthers next match was Thursday evening at The Fish Tank in Sun Valley against The Community School Cutthroats. On Tuesday, Sept. 26, the Panthers host Northside Conference rival Camas County with JV action at 6 p.m. and varsity play at 7:30 p.m.
