Trespassers trash vacant houses in Bellevue

By GREG MOORE
Express Staff Writer

The Bellevue Marshal's Office is asking citizens to report instances of people using vacant houses without the owners' permission.

"Vacant houses in the city have been used as flophouses," Marshal Tim Green told the City Council on Sept. 14. "People have been breaking into them and then living in them without permission."

Green said at least a couple of vacant houses have been used for teens' parties.

"It's all drug and alcohol related," he said.

He said the interior of one house on Fourth Street had been ruined through repeated use, with holes in the walls, damaged carpet and mounds of litter.

"The Realtor won't even go in there," he said.

Green said trespassers had lived in the house in clear sight of neighbors, but that the neighbors had felt too intimidated to report the matter to police. He said when police questioned them, they reported seeing guns among the trespassers.

"If you see it out there, just let us know, please, and we'll contact the (owners)," he said.
