Noyes a winner in Valley footrace

Cutthroat thinclads in action

Showing some of the fruits of her off-season training, Community School senior Mali Noyes saved a homestretch kick and won Thursday's Valley Invitational girls' footrace by 18 seconds over 2005 State 2A queen Lisa Romer of Valley.

Noyes, third behind Romer in the State 2A cross country run last fall at Boise's Eagle Island State Park, won Thursday's 3.1-mile (5 kilometer) race in 21:51. Romer (22:09) and Gooding's Lara Nelson (23:44) were the next-best runners.

Cutthroat sophomore Marissa Dreyer (27:44) was 17th. Girls' team winner was Valley (31 points) over Oakley (43) and Gooding (46).

Alex Crystal (18:49) of Kimberly was the boys' medalist. Besides the results of his two girls, Community School coach Rick Kapala was happy with the results of Mike Matteson (8th place, 19:50), Sean Dumke (28th place, 21:53) and Taylor Benz (49th place, 24:42).

Kimberly (28 points) won the boys' title ahead of Gooding (41) and Oakley (62).
