U.S. paragliding championships set for Bald Mountain

Paragliding pilots from throughout the U.S. will descend from Bald Mountain later this month in the 2006 U.S. Paragliding National Championships.

Some 100 of the top paragliding pilots in the U.S. are expected to participate in the championship events Aug. 27 through Sept. 2.

Sanctioned by the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, the basic competition format is to complete a cross county course flying as quickly as possible to the finish line. Courses range from 10 to 100 miles. Pilots are expected to reach heights up to 18,000 feet.

Fly Sun Valley, a local paragliding business, is the official host of the event.

"We are looking forward to hosting a very successful event," said Chuck Smith, Fly Sun Valley owner and operator. "The latter part of August has proven to be a highly consistent window, offering great weather, excellent lapse rates, wonderful thermals and one of the finest times of the year for distance flying."

Sun Valley Company and the U.S. Forest Service worked out the details to make the event possible.
