Heightened security in place at Friedman

By PAT MURPHY

Small it might be, but Friedman Memorial Airport is imposing the same extraordinary security measures as major international gateway airports since British intelligence uncovered an alleged plot to bomb transatlantic airliners.

No liquids of any type—beverages, lotions, shampoos, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and such—will be allowed as carry-on items when boarding flights of SkyWest Airlines and Horizon Air, according to Friedman Security Coordinator Steve Guthrie. They can be carried in checked luggage.

However, baby formula milk and medicines can be carried.

The increased procedures do not apply to general aviation corporate aircraft.

Unattended vehicles also are banned from parking in front of the terminal, Guthrie said.

Passengers are being advised to arrive at the airport 90 minutes before flight time to clear the security checkpoint.

An alleged plot to use liquid explosives to blow up airliners in flight was uncovered and made public earlier this week.
