Sarchett helps McU Sports to western title

Softball winners at Salem

Ketchum's Bob Sarchett has been playing slow-pitch softball since Atkinson Park was a pile of rocks. The sport has given the multi-sport athlete a long list of accomplishments including last weekend's trip to a Salem (Ore.) tournament.

Catcher/first baseman Sarchett, 62, was a key member of the 11-player McU Sports travel team based out of Boise that captured the USSSA Western Nationals tournament championship in the 10-team Men's AAA 50-and-over class Sunday.

McU Sports went 5-0 over two days, capturing preliminary games over teams from Vancouver (Wash.), Seattle and Reno prior to two wins over chief challenger Shilo Development of Boise. McU Sports won the first clash of the Boise senior titans 23-21 and took the decider 21-11.

Sarchett, batting fifth in the potent McU Sports batting order, made the All-tournament team with a .722 batting average (13-for-18, 11 RBI). Most Valuable Player and batting champion (.850) was McU Sports pitcher Wayne Clark, 56, of Boise.

McU Sports, next playing in the USA Nationals 55-and-over tournament at Seattle Sept. 10, is now 23-1 in tournament play since winning a national championship last fall.
