They tested their technical skating and artistic skills and enjoyed themselves on a hot Idaho weekend.
The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club hosted over 180 competitive figure skaters for its 40th annual U.S. Figure Skating Association Summer Championships July 20-23 at Sun Valley Skating Center.
This year's championships offered 90 different competitive events over four days. Most events were judged on technical skill, artistic interpretation and overall skating quality. But Sunday's showcase, popular to non-skating spectators, emphasized pure entertainment.
Largest single event this year was Intermediate Ladies Freeskating with 17 skaters.
Among SVFSC gold medalists or first-place winners were Lauren Farr, Julianna Lamb, Nicole Pratt, Madigan Miller, Serena Hertel, Lex Shapiro, Abby Chase, Katie Lotz, Catherine Estep, Isabella Bourret, Dylan Millar and Kenny Pratt.
Special awards went to Lauren Farr and Julianna Lamb.
SVSEF member Farr, 15, a high school sophomore from Idaho Falls who summers with her mother Pam Farr in Sun Valley, earned the Phyllis Kourland Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Artistic Performance last Saturday. She skated a beautiful, moving program and got the nod from a panel of five judges.
Local skater Lamb, a Community School eighth-grade student, won the competition's Outstanding Showcase Award from over 80 entries for her "Be A Clown," routine. She will compete in early August in the USFSA National Showcase event in Chicago.
