Ultimate action heats up at the park

KB?s, Wrapcity stay unbeaten

There were some interesting match-ups in Thursday's Ultimate Town League at Ketchum's Atkinson Park.

Board Bin (1-2) collected its first victory 13-9 over Grumpy's (0-3). But the outstanding match of the night featured WrapCity and KB's, both previously undefeated. KB's (3-0) finally won 15-14 over WrapCity (2-1) in a memorable match.

It was a clash of Titans and the crowd wasn't disappointed. Fans erupted with cheers at each point scored.

KB's led the match at halftime 7-5 bolstered by the outstanding effort of Christl Holzl on offense and defense. Down 10-7 late in the game, WrapCity launched a major comeback fueled by the tenacious play of Bill "Taco" Sherrerd.

Both teams flirted with the use of a zone defense with varying degrees of effectiveness, but it was the tremendous offensive efforts that highlighted the second half. They included an Olympian sprint by John King and Mike Payne culminating in a spectacular double layout in which Payne prevailed, gaining another critical point for KB's.

WrapCity's Cody Floatplane's gravity-defying exploits in the end zone were also notable as the teams battled to a 14-14 tie, setting up a grueling game point. Superb inside-out throwing by Herb Kaup and Jamon Frostenson worked the disc into the end zone for KB's and secured the close triumph.

In contrast, Board Bin and Grumpy's played a rather friendly game.

The teams matched points with spectacular play by Laurel Hammertime racking up points for Grumps. But Board Bin began to pull away. Lonnie "Dart" Lundquist sent a perfect toss deep to the end zone where Doug Wilson skied out of double team coverage to haul down a Willie Mays-style catch, much to his own amazement.

The local legends of Grumpy's hung tough cutting a six-point deficit in half with run of four unanswered points. But they couldn't shut down a potent Board Bin offense.

Lucy Chubb and Tess Durberville controlled the possession and set up Jordan "Air" Dale for several points, Board Bin came away victorious 13-9.

Ultimate Frisbee matches are played Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at Atkinson Park. Pickup games on the same field are slated for Tuesdays at 6 p.m.
