All Stars take fifth at Driggs tourney

The Wood River All Star 11-12-year-old team compiled a 3-2 record for fifth place last week at a baseball tournament in Driggs.

The 9-10 team didn't fare as well, going 0-4.

Today and Saturday the teams play tournament baseball in Burley. In today's opening action, the younger team plays Team Madison at 9:45 a.m., while the older boys take on the Bear River Cats at 11:30 a.m.

The 11-12 team lost their first game at Driggs 7-12.

They fared better in their second match beating St. Anthony 6-3. Key plays were a bases loaded triple by Ben Williams and a "play of the day" diving catch by Eli McNees. Strong pitching performances by Max Jones and Connor Braatz secured the victory.

The team's good fortunes continued into their third game when they blanked Sugar Salem 8-0. Max Jones started on the mound for the All Stars and registered six strikeouts in the first two innings. K. T. Martinez finished the game and helped the All Stars to their first shutout of the year. Jones and Martinez contributed to the offense as well. Jones hit a home run and a triple and Martinez got a triple.

In their fourth game, the All Stars lost 13-6 to the Twin Falls Americans. Hitting was solid, 17 of them, but the All Stars left runners on the bases too many times. Connor Braatz hit his second home run of the tournament.

Wood River capped off the tournament by beating Blackfoot 6-3. Solid pitching and a home run by Max Jones and a double by K.T. Martinez sparked the All Stars to victory.
