SUMMER ACTIVITIES SERIES

The summer months bring an abundance of mountain and road bike adventures. Various ongoing weekly group rides invite everyone from first-time riders to expert cyclists to pedal their legs away.

The group rides offer basic skills, opportunities to meet riders or physically challenging workouts. The season is ripe with competitive events from single-track races to century rides. Remember, pack water and wear a helmet.

Weekly group rides

Sawtooth Velo hosts beginner group mountain ride, 6 p.m., Mondays, June 12 and 19. The beginner ride offers bike handling skill instruction and answers questions for first time riders. The group meets on the field next to the Lady of the Snows Church on Sun Valley Road in Ketchum.

Elephant's Perch Mountain Bike Ride, meet 6:15 p.m., Mondays, at the Perch in Ketchum. All levels welcome.

Tuesday night expert group road rides leave for roundtrips from Sun Summit in Ketchum, to Prairie Creek and back.

All levels are welcome to Sturtevants Ladies Night Rides, 5:30 p.m., Tuesday nights. The rides explore the trails of Ketchum and Sun Valley with a focus on improving biking skills. Meet at Sturtos in Ketchum.

The Elephant's Perch Road Bike rides leave 6:15 p.m., Wednesday evenings, from the back door of the Ketchum store. Destinations for the approximately one-hour rides will be determined before departing. Helmets are required. Everyone is invited.

Sawtooth Velo offers Thursday night team rides that meet at the Elephant's Perch at 5:30 p.m. for intermediate interval workouts.

All abilities are welcome to Sturtevants mountain bike rides, 6 p.m., Thursday nights. Location changes weekly. Call (208) 788-7847 for details.

Saturday group road rides venture up to Galena Summit, and sometimes beyond, for rigorous weekend workouts. The group meets 9 a.m. at the Elephants Perch in Ketchum.

Mountain bike events

The 5th Annual Wood River Cup Short Track X-C Mountain Bike Racing Series continues Wednesday nights with a new course each week. The five race series begins with a 6:30 p.m. sport and novice race, 7:10 p.m. youth series and a 7:30 p.m. expert and pro event. Registration opens 5 p.m. the day of race. Prizes are offered for each race and the overall series. Entry fees are $12 per day or $50 for the series. Races are located in Croy Canyon, on the backside of Rotarun, 3.5 miles west of Hailey.

The Knobby Tire Series offers mountain bike races throughout Idaho. The Epic Soldier Mountain March challenges riders 10 a.m., Saturday, June 24, to race the cross-country course. The course has it all—fast single track, a challenging climb, long technical descents and creek crossings. The Soldier Mountain Slaughter Downhill follows on Sunday, June 25. It navigates a steep 1,400-foot vertical drop track. Soldier Mountain is 12 miles north of Fairfield.

The Galena Grinder Mountain Bike Race welcomes racers Sunday, July 23, for the annual grueling ride. Start times are 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., depending on the race category level.

Road riding events

The Ketchum Criterium races Sunday, June 18, through downtown Ketchum.

The Hailey Criterium Series starts Wednesday, July 5, with two races to follow on consecutive Wednesdays.

The Sawtooth Century Ride, a fully supported day of cycling, September 16, tours the spectacular Sawtooth and Boulder Mountain ranges located just north of Ketchum.

Sawtooth Velo holds Summer 2006 Cycling Clinics, two-hour sessions slated the first week of July and through the end of August for beginning to professional cyclists. The clinics offer techniques for riders to improve riding skills. Riders meet at Atkinson Park in Ketchum for rides throughout the Valley.
