Mike Glenn is ready for some football.

The Wood River High School varsity coach takes to the practice field next week with his second annual Wolverine Football Camp to start getting the team ready for the 2006 gridiron season.

"The main purpose is to perpetuate our football program and get kids ready for our first game on Aug. 25," Glenn said. "We have an early first game this year so this camp is really important. This is part of the overall big picture to grow football in our valley."

The camp, held at the WRHS football practice field in Hailey, is open to high school students grades 9-12. It starts Monday and ends Friday. Sessions are from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Equipment checkout is Sunday at 6 p.m. at the WRHS locker rooms.

Participants can pre-register by contacting Glenn on his cell phone at (208) 724-1863. Registration will also be accepted at equipment checkout, or even as late as Monday morning before the camp starts.

The cost is $75 per student. Besides Glenn, instructors will include the entire varsity, junior varsity and freshmen football coaching staffs.

The camp is full contact with full pads, meaning lots of blocking, tackling and so forth.

Glenn said the camp will focus on teaching basic techniques and fundamentals. He also considers it a teaching experience for the coaches to help establish consistency in coaching methodology.

Glenn said he expects about 50 students to participate.

Another weeklong camp, held in May for students grades 3-8, drew 65 participants.

"This camp is kind of a benchmark to see where we are with our football team," he said. "The parents are very important, so we need to get the parents involved.

Glenn, in his second year as coach, developed the summer camp program last year as part of an overall strategy to make high school football exciting in the Wood River Valley.

Results so far have been promising. The Wolverines, on a 14-game losing streak prior to the 2005 season, started last year with an impressive 42-0 trouncing of the Filer Wildcats. Finishing the year at 4-6, not quite a winning season, there were lots of exciting moments nonetheless.

For instance, the Wolverines ended a 30-year draught against the Jerome Tigers in a 16-0 shutout victory. Another highlight: five Wolverines landed spots on the Fourth District All-Conference football squad.

Glenn came to WRHS from Eagle High School near Boise where he amassed an impressive record. In the 10 years he coached at Eagle, the Mustangs were 72-36 and won state 5A championships in 1998 and 2001.
