Fireworks on tap for Evgeni Plushenko

Ice shows begin, Olympic king here July 4

The Sun Valley Ice Show debuts its 70th season Saturday, June 10 at Sun Valley Skating Center. And what a season it promises to be!

One of the big highlights is the appearance of recently-crowned Olympic champion Evgeni "The Dominator" Plushenko of Russia for the Independence Day holiday show of Tuesday, July 4.

Three-time world champion Plushenko, 23, a determined 5-10, 159-pounder, completely dominated the men's figure skating competition of the 2006 Winter Olympics at Torino. He set a new record winning the gold by the widest margin ever.

Plushenko, coached by Alexei Mishin, overcame the disappointment of withdrawing from the 2005 World Championships in Moscow by blowing away the Olympic field in the biggest competition of his life.

He skated to "The Godfather" soundtrack and rubbed out all of the pretenders.

The silver medalist in the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City, Plushenko became the fifth different Russian man in the last five Olympics to win the gold. Others were Alexei Yagudin in 2002, Ilia Kulik in 1998, Alexei Urmanov in 1994 and Viktor Petrenko 1992.

His coach Mishin believes that Plushenko's creative and artistic potential is nearly limitless. He seems to set new skating standards each year.

Plusenko's holiday show is probably the most attractive of the 14 on this year's ice show slate but other well-known stars have their own nights.

Olympic bronze medalist Jozef Sabovik headlines this Saturday's show. Two-time Olympic bronze medalist Philippe Candeloro of France appears July 1, world bronze medalist Evan Lysacek and Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen on Aug. 19, and two-time world champion Irina Slutskaya on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Ticket information is available by calling 622-2135.
