Hunt for morels with the Land Trust

Inside one of the most historical of old Hailey homes, spins the brain trust of the Wood River Land Trust.

A non-profit organization, the Land Trust protects natural and wildlife habitats throughout the region including ranching, farming and recreation areas.

The organization is also community minded. It presents activities for the community over the entire year. This summer is loaded with choices.

May 31, 6 p.m., Morel Walk: At the Cedar Bend Preserve in Hailey: Morels are locally found delicacies that look a bit like a morphed ice cone. They can grow as tall as 12 inches. Unlike other mushrooms, morels are hollow inside, a specific distinguishing characteristic that aids in identifying them from the similar-looking false morel, which is poisonous.

Led by Kathy Richmond of the Southern Idaho Mycological Association, this outing will teach about environments in which morels are found and about how to distinguish between poisonous mushrooms and tasty morels. To reach Cedar Bend Preserve, go west on Cedar Street from Main Street in Hailey.

June 7, 6:30 p.m., Wildflower Hike: With botanist Carol Blackburn, along Lake Creek preserve, north of Ketchum.

June 10, 9 a.m.-noon, Kids' Fishing Day: Bring the kids to Riverside Pond at Eagle Park, Hailey. Parents must accompany children. Fishing poles are available.

June 14, 6 p.m., Benefit Back Alley Party: Held at the Wicked Spud, on Main St. in Hailey. Music by 812 band, food, beverages, dancing and raffle prizes.

June 17, 10 a.m., Weed Out Day: At Howard Preserve, Bellevue with Malia Leonard, Outreach Coordinator at the Blaine County Weed Department, Refreshments provided.

June 22, 7-10 p.m. Fly-Fishing Film Festival: See five blue ribbon films and join fellow river lovers for door prizes, drawings, and refreshments. Presented by Silver Creek Outfitters, at nexStage Theatre, Ketchum.
