Placeholder Park begins to take shape

Town square in Ketchum is temporary fix until master plan is ready

Asphalt in downtown Ketchum met its demise last week as city workers tore up a parking lot to make way for an interim town plaza.

Ketchum officials have longer-term plans for the city-owned lot at Fourth Street and East Avenue, across from Giacobbi Square. But before the downtown master plan is finalized and executed, residents and visitors will have another patch of green on which to rest and play.

Pavers and sod installation are the next steps in the process, which should be done in the next few weeks.

Once the sod is put in, people will have to stay off it for 10 days while it takes root, said City Administrator Ron LeBlanc.

Numerous businesses, including Sun Valley Garden Center, are donating time and materials to the project. An anonymous donor said she would pay for the construction of a water feature in the plaza's center. It will be designed and installed by Sun Valley Garden Center owner Mike Turzian.

The first Farmers' Market in Ketchum this season, scheduled for June 6, may take place on a closed-off East Avenue, LeBlanc said.

The downtown master plan, a draft of which will be unveiled in mid-June, will include a permanent town plaza with additional features.

Dates for the plan's debut will be announced in June.
