Youth baseball, softball welcomes 503 kids

Big turnout for summer leagues


Next week is the big week for the Blaine County Recreation District's Wood River Little League baseball and softball leagues for the 2006 summer.

Program director Raeghen Peavey said 503 Wood River Valley youth are enrolled in the program, which generally runs three to four weeks in June including tournaments.

T-ball season kicked off Tuesday night at The Community Campus field in Hailey. Most of the other league seasons begin May 30 and 31.

In all there are 40 teams signed up—33 in the youth baseball leagues and seven in softball. Kids ages 5-13 are kept busy for most of June.

The Rec District expressed its appreciation to the 40 volunteer coaches and their assistants who are donating their valued time and energy.

And here is a list of teams and sponsors for each league:

Wood River Little League T-Ball (10 teams): Sponsors and team names are Marketron, Whitehead Landscaping and Snow Removal, Cornerstone Realty Inc., Sawtooth Wood Products, Wood River Community YMCA, REE-Construction, Elk Roofing Co. Inc., First Bank of Idaho, Hailey Eye Center and Haemmerle & Haemmerle PLLC.

The eight-game season runs June 6 through June 29, on Tuesdays and Thursdays on fields in Hailey and Ketchum. League director is Raeghen Peavey.

Coed Coach Pitch 7-8 (10 teams): Ogden Raptors sponsored by Fisher Appliance LLC, Sacramento River Cats by Rocky Mountain Hardware, Burlington Bees by S. Erwin Excavation, Corpus Christi Hooks by Allred Precision Millwork, Lansing Lugnuts by Hailey Nursery, Binghamton Mets by POWER Engineers, Carolina Mudcats by Smoky Mountain Pizza and Pasta, Tucson Sidewinders by Blaine County Fitness LLC, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by Bald Mountain Realty, and Savannah Sand Gnats by Wood River Lions Club.

The seven-game season runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from May 31 through June 23 on fields in Hailey and Ketchum. League director is Andy Portillo.

Baseball 9-10 (7 teams): Midland Rock Hounds sponsored by Marketron, Augusta Green Jackets by Wood River Family Medicine, Batavia Muckdogs by Idaho Mountain Express, Lake Elsinore Storm by Sun Valley Real Estate, Louisville Bats by Four Seasons Spa & Pool and Conrad Construction, Mobile Bay Bears by Sawtooth Auto Sales, and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes by Lefty's Bar & Grill.

The seven-game season runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from May 31 through June 23 on fields in Ketchum and Hailey. League coordinator is Scott Carter.

Baseball 11-12 (6 teams): New York Yankees sponsored by Fireplaces Etc., Oakland A's by Cox Communications, Los Angeles Dodgers by Atkinsons' Markets, San Diego Padres by Shelley's Deli, San Francisco Giants by Tim Jeneson Insurance, and New York Mets by Wise Guy Pizza Pie.

The eight-game season runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from May 31 through June 23 on fields in Hailey and Ketchum. League coordinators are Jim Braatz and Ron Buell.

Girls' 7-10 Softball (4 teams): Auburn Tigers sponsored by MBT, Kansas Jayhawks by Shorty's Diner, Notre Dame Fighting Irish by Marketron, and Colorado Rams by D.L. Evans Bank. The eight-game season runs May 30 through June 22, on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Hailey. League director is Raeghen Peavey.

Girls' 11-13 Softball (3 teams): Kansas State Wildcats sponsored by POWER Engineers, Georgia Bulldogs by Donnelley Sports, and Wisconsin Badgets by Cynthia Unger DDS. The six-game season runs May 30 through June 22, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at South Valley Sports Complex softball field, Hailey. League director is Raeghen Peavey.
